Biography

Matthew Cole is an American painter who lives and works in New York City. In his Queens studio, Cole employs drawing, collage, and printmaking techniques, to then paint his psychologically-charged narratives.

In his paintings, the mystical and reality almost always coexist - the processes of layering and distorting are instrumental in conveying the distinct emotional tenor in the artist's work. In the studio, Cole fuses his own personal, as well as found imagery and art historical references to tell a story, composed of layers of figuration, landscape, and often using interior space as a framework for his subjects. Cole's images represent the fragmented nature of the perception of memories, dreams, the imagined, and the profound human

experience.
